Is it all Greek to you? How to Learn Greek Vocabulary Without Losing Your Mind : Strategies and Tricks That Work!

You’re learning Greek, and every week you bump into new words. Words about food, family, feelings, the bus that never came… All lovely — but how are you supposed to remember them?

Vocabulary is one of the most important (and often trickiest) parts of a language. Below you’ll find clever, simple, and fun strategies to learn and remember new Greek words — without stress and without staring at your notebook in despair.

📌 1. Don’t just learn words — learn them in sentences

A word on its own is like a lost tourist. But when you put it in a sentence, it comes to life!

Example:

• Instead of writing just: καρέκλα (chair)
• Write: Η καρέκλα είναι δίπλα στο τραπέζι. (The chair is next to the table.)
• Or even better: Κάθομαι στην καρέκλα και πίνω καφέ. (I sit on the chair and drink coffee.)

That way you remember not just the word, but how to use it.

🖼️ 2. Use images (the funnier, the better!)

Our brain remembers pictures better than plain words.

• Make your own picture dictionary.
• Stick labels with Greek words on objects around your house.
• Draw (or try to!) the words in your notebook.

And yes, your sketch of the ψυγείο (fridge) might not be a masterpiece — but you’ll remember it!

🎭 3. Act it out!

Don’t be shy — get a little theatrical!

• Learn emotion words and act them out.
• Say: “Είμαι θυμωμένος!” (I’m angry!) with an angry face.
• Say: “Είμαι κουρασμένος…” (I’m tired…) and pretend you’re falling asleep.

If you feel the word, you’re more likely to keep it.

📖 4. Organize your words into themes

Don’t keep a chaotic list of words about fruit, verbs, medical checkups, and zoo animals — all mixed up.

Sort your vocabulary into categories:
🍎 Food
🏠 Home
😊 Feelings
🚍 Transportation
⛱️ Holidays

This way, your brain can find the right word when it needs it.

🗣️ 5. Speak! Use words in real life

The best strategy of all: use the new words as soon as you can.

• Write a short story with them.
• Say them out loud as you walk around.
• Use them in a conversation with your teacher, a friend, or… your mirror.

Using a word is the best way to lock it into your memory.

🔁 7. Repetition = the magic key

Don’t learn something today and expect to remember it next month. Memory needs repetition — but not the boring kind. Try short, spaced reviews:

• 10 minutes the the first day
• 5 minutes after 3 days
• A quick review next week

Little by little — not all at once!
